Photo a day - 22/04/17

* Took our time this morning, had another chat with the Swiss, changed the band-aid on my foot (looks not too bad!)
* Videoed Damien folding the tent.
* Left for the Cliff trail below Kalbarri.
* Stopped at Jacks Point to look at the surfers, big waves but not much action. Updated photo a day in between waves.
* Did part of Bigurda trail from Eagle Gorge but not too much as it is sand and small rocks (not ideal for my foot), the scenery does not change much and too many flies around.
* Had a look at Eagle Gorge Lookout then drove to Natural Bridge. Had lunch under a shaded area but flies still unbelievable... Did the broadwalk, sat and looked at the ocean and the waves crashing against the cliffs.
* Went to the other 2 lookouts before definitely leaving the area. Drove to Geraldton, got some petrol and kept going.
* Found a rest area by the ocean, arrived right in time for the sunset. Ate the remaining of our pasta, olive oil and grated parmesan.
* Built the tent a bit away from the car, on sand, right in front of the ocean :) great way to spend our last night!

Photo a day - 21/04/17

* Tried to be up early but not as early as we wanted. On the road before 8am.
* Arrived at Kalbarri National Park and its first 2 lookouts around 9pm. View is good at the 1st one, the second one is pretty crap.
* Drove to The Loop, had breakfast in the carpark and started the 8km walk by 10.30. Were slow at 1st (getting use to be careful walking with my injured toe) but managed to do the whole walk in 3h! (suggested between 3 and 5).
* The Loop passes by Nature's Window (a hole in a rock - making a window shape), then you walk on the rim of a gorge for 3kms, go down in the gorge and walk along the Murchison River (rocks and sandy bank), you have to climb a bit at some places. No shade.
* After finishing The Loop we had lunch at the shaded picnic tables (sandwiches), then headed to another walk called Z-Bend (from the shape of the river).
* Went to the lookout together, but only Damien did the whole walk to the gorge. Waited for him back at the car with a book. Damien went a bit in the water, I took a nap.
* Drove to Kalbarri village to find a campsite for the night. Found space at the ranch (they have beautiful horses).
* Had showers and dinner. Talked a long while with French-speaking Swiss. Very interesting people.
* Went to bed quite late. It is our last night in a campsite.

Photo a day - 20/04/17

* Got up around 7am. Tidied the tent and headed to the beach for our 2nd and last dolphin feeding.
* Did not get picked, that is life (a shame though!) Went back and had breakfast.
* Went for a long walk before leaving for Kalbarri.
* Got injured miles away from the campsite. A lot of blood (but no sharks).Took us a while to go back but luckily a family offered us to drop us with their small boat: lifesavers!
* Try to clean it, had a shower, reception of campsite useless left for Denham.
* Caught the pharmacist just before he left, was a big help, told us what to do.
* Had lunch on the sea front, then re-opened the wound to get it completely clean...
* Got rewarded with ice-cream!
* Stopped at Eagle Bluff lookout and spotted a ray
* Stopped at Shell Beach and got to walk on a beach made of billions of shells.
* Back on the road for Kalbarri, it is really late... 4.30pm
* Did not managed to go as far as we wanted but still drove a good distance. Rest area is busy but we easily found a place for the tent.
* Prepared the tent while Damien started dinner (crêpes)
* watched the stars for a while, then watched at all our photos on Damien's phone (re-lived all NZ and some of Australia) at some point moved to the tent and I fell asleep.

Photo a day - 18/04/17

* Hard time to get up this morning. Breakfast and on the road to Monkey Mia by 8.30am.
* Reached Carnavon and did some groceries.
* Ate at a lookout in the middle of nowhere
* Had a look at Hamelin Pool and the Stroglodite: microns that look like rocks (as old as dinosaurs).
* 4.30pm, arrived at D. and the Visitor Centre told us that the camping at Monkey Mia still had space available.
* Build our tent and went for a sunset walk on the beach.
* Saw dolphins, loads of then and so close to the shore! One of them was really friendly and got a dolfy with it (dolphin-selfy)!
* Had dinner and met a French guy that we had meet back in Lucky Bay, spoke with him and his friend all evening about places to go and see around OZ also talked about previous travels mainly India.
* Late bedtime, it is cold tonight.

Friday, 14 April 2017

Photo a day - 14/04/17

* Did not managed to get up early like we wanted...
* Left campsite after 8am but had to come back (forgot water!), real departure 8.30am.
* Drove all the way to Yardie Gorge. Did the nature walk and walking trail. Saw some Osprey nests and rock wallabies.
* Drove to Oyster Stacks and went snorkeling. Saw a lot of fish.
* Drove to Turquoise Bay, had lunch in the car (leftovers). 2 snorkeling options: drift and lagoon. We did both.
* Drift snorkeling: saw 2 rays and numerous fish + jellyfish (got another blister at one of my toe from the fins - same foot as yesterday & a sting from one of the red jellyfish - ouch)
* Lagoon snorkeling: more fish, jellyfish and a green turtle!
* Took some sand and a few shells + dead coral (but shsh).
* Rushed back to the campsite before they closed, got our new emplacement & gave back the snorkeling equipment.
* Damien cooked dinner while I showered (took me ages to get my hair back...)
* While dinning, checked the underwater photos and videos (there are some good ones!)
* Played card while updating email + instagram (photo a day)
* Teeth, Damien shower + shave and bed!

Tuesday, 11 April 2017

Photo a day - 11/04/17

* Awake before the sunrise a 6.30 but Damien got up around 8am.
* After breakfast we headed to Knox Gorge (after Joffre Falls on a 7kms unsealed road).
* Did the walk before the lookout to avoid families. We wore shoes this morning and that was a good call, the descent is steep.
* Amazing gorge, really beautiful with a lot of pools, a winding path, a bit of climbing. It finishes the gorge gets really tight like a chasm and I think it is from there that the "adventure tours" do the abseiling and stuff.
* Once back up we had a look at the lookout, could see some of the way but not the end.
* Drove to Joffre Falls. Prepared lunch to take with us: Julienne of veg thanks to Damien's new toy (a Julienne peeler that we have been looking for a long time).
* Started the walk around 12pm. Went down pretty easily (wearing flipflops) and quite fast. Once in the Gorge we went to the waterfall 1st for a swim. Pretty, but more&more in the shade.
* After lunch, we went on the otherside of the gorge that everyone recommended. Quite a long swim, get to an "island", cross it (say hi to a big lizard) and have a look at the other waterfall and the remaining of the gorge that goes deeper and deeper and to finish go all the way back!
* Dried a bit and went back up towards the car as it was too cold in the shade. Got changed and headed to Tom Price for Petrol.
* The only sealed road to Exmouth is taking us on a long detour south... + our chosen night spot is closed so we found another truck area...

Monday, 10 April 2017

Photo a day - 10/04/17

* Had a hard time to get up, I was ready to have a second night!
* After a late breakfast we went to 2 lookouts of the gorge and pool then headed down.
* Managed the whole walk to Circular Pool in flipflops. Damien had a swim in the freezing cold water. Left as the place got crowded really quickly.
* 1h drive from Dale day area to Joffre Falls. Podcast for Damien and unplanned nap for me...
* Joffre lookout and falls were stunning and the view of the pool really made us want to go (maybe tonight or before leaving the National Park).
* Drove on unsealed road to reach the campground. There they told us that it is fully booked for a week along with the adventure tour in the gorge that we wanted to do -> result of the school holidays...
* More unsealed road to reach Weano day area, I am the one driving this time. Took is 30min to reach.
* Had lunch at Weano area and went to 2 lookouts.
* Stunning gorge! Quite an adventure to access the various highlights but really fun and different! Highlights: Amphitheater, Spider Way and Kermits Pool.
* It was easier to go back as we knew the way and obstacles. From the car, took us 1h to reach our night spot.
* Tonight's dinner: satay noodle + spicy omelette/frittata with a lot of good things in it. (took 1h but was good!)
* Trains can take 5 mins to pass the crossing! (we slept by a railway crossing and decided to count).

Sunday, 9 April 2017

Photo a day - 09/04/17

* Got up quite early but compared to our neighbours apparently not early enough.
* Were on the road before 8.15am to Port Headland.
* Went food shopping in Coles and did a petrol stop.
* On our way to Karijini National Park. Had an early lunch on the road.
* So many road trains on the road (long trucks - 3 to 4 trailers). Overtaking them is not relaxing!
* Arrived at Karijini Visitor Centre around 3pm. Got some info and went to Dale campsite. Were given a spot with not much shade...
* Went for a swim at Fortescue and Fern Falls, perfect end of afternoon activity after a day in the car.
* Wraps for dinner: mustard, beef, spinas and brie.
* Played card and then tent (Damien listened to a podcast, I journaled and read).

Thursday, 6 April 2017

Photo a day - 06/04/17

* up eatly and on the road before 9am, heading to Broome (around 100kms).

* went food shopping and checked in the YHA, we are treating ourselves to a private room!
* lunch, nap, washes, internet a bit
* went to Cable Beach for sunset. But with our luck, we did not really had one (too many clouds).
* dinner, more washes (1st ones did not work at all... Our clothes were dirtier than before...)
* worked on a timetable for our summer plans in Europe
* bed around 10pm which is super late for us!

Tuesday, 4 April 2017

Photo a day - 04/04/17

* Drove to Lake Argyle, enjoyed the view from 2 lookouts and then drove the dam.
* Went back to Kununurra to exchange our National Park pass for a monthly one.
* Drove all the way to Halls Creek (everything is closed there too or only 4WD). Kept driving to our night spot.
* Tremendous amount of birds along or on the road and more cattle than usual too.
* Lovely campsite, there is a river crossing an old road, went on it for sunset pics and saw strange birds and a freshie! (fresh water crocodile).
* Pasta and parmesan for dinner then bed.

Monday, 3 April 2017

Photo a day - 03/04/17

* Slow morning, got up around 8.30 and left at 9.45 NT time.
* Reached 10 000kms !!! Pretty exciting.
* Passed the boarder NT/WA, gained 1h30 but lost our veg and fruits.
* Arrived at Kununurra, at the info centre Damien got his dreams crushed... Everything in the Kimberley region is still closed (wet season). It was supposed to be the highlight of his trip...
* Offered to do scenic flights but did not take...
* Spent some time in the library (to stay out of the sun - internet was super expensive... so we used our 3G).
* 4.20pm, went to Mirima National Park whig is supposed to be a mini version of Purnululu and walked to the lookout.
* Sunset at 5.30 (not used to that....) Still on the road toward Lake Argyle.
* While crossing a floodway we saw a baby crocodile cross in front of us!

Friday, 31 March 2017

Photo a day - 31/03/17

* Morning shower (a luxury) + breakfast
* Visitor centre (paid our park pass) + information gallery about fauna and flora of Kakadu National Park (needs to be freshened up).
* Went to Nourlangie region famous for its aboriginal rock art. Did 2 walks and saw great and interesting paintings on the rocks some might be older than 20 000 years old.
* After our 1st walk, we sheltered in the car during a thunderstorm and had lunch.
* Then we climbed Nawurlandja lookout. The view was breathtaking! We could miles away.
* During our 2nd rock art walk we saw more great art and got rained on, on the way back...
* Neither sleeping options in the Yellow River region pleased us (especially with the rain) so we decided to be sneeky and sleep in our car at Mirrai Lookout.

Wednesday, 29 March 2017

Photo a day - 29/03/17

* Woke up early (before Damien!) Had nice bday messages waiting for me.
* Spent most of the morning by the hotel pool.
* Had Mexican for lunch in town.
* Spent nearly 3h at the wave pool by the waterfront.
* Had dinner at a tapas restaurant, ate so much that I did not ordered dessert...
* just before 10pm: swam in hotel pool during a thunderstorm, it was pretty wild!

Monday, 27 March 2017

Photo a day - 27/03/17

* Went to Bachelor to get info about Litchfield National Park. A lot is closed due to the wet season and recent rain.
* In the park we saw the Magnetic Termite Mounds, went to Florence Fall, Buley Rockhole (we had a swim there), Tolmer Falls, Wangi Falls and drove to Cascades but did not go on the tracks.
* Sneaked in the campground of Florence Falls and had a shower + did our dishes.
* Went to the closest free camp from Darwin, (met the Canadian&Spanish couple again).

Friday, 24 March 2017

Photo a day - 24/03/17

* Tried to leave the campground early to not pay but while leaving the ranger picked up the payments nearly right in front of us.
* Parked the car in the day area of the gorge, had breakfast and we went for THE big walk.
* I stopped after an hour or so, it was planned that way, because you have to swim part of the walk and i did not want to do that. Damien kept going.
* Waited for Damien at the Gorge where I had a swim and read for a while.
* I am tired of the heat and the sun, I really need a day off. So when Damien came back I drove to Alice Springs and we checked in the YHA hostel.
* Each in different room, some the apart will do us some good.
* Had a late lunch together, I skyped my mum and then had dinner together. We finally bought our plane tickets out of Australia!
* The night was not really relaxing, there was some hard drug issues with some guest and screams so the police was involved but it took a good part of the night away.

Thursday, 23 March 2017

Photo a day - 23/03/17

* Drove to Alice Springs (I think I killed a bird...)
* Wandered in Alice for a while, had breakfast in a carpark looking at a field.
* Decided to leave and go straight to the MacDonnell Ranges.
* Stopped at Stanley Chasm and Ellery Creek Big Hole (really bad dirt road but gorgeous gorge and good swim).
* Finally stopped at Ormiston Gorge for the night at the campground. Damien went for a walk while I relaxed in the car.

Wednesday, 22 March 2017

Photo a day - 22/03/17

* Up before 6am again. In the car heading for Kata Tjuta (or the Olgas).
* Sunrise from the Kata Tjuta platform had a really nice surprise: view of Uluru (far away but not for my camera!)
* The sun rose right behind Uluru it was a fantastic sight! Worth the early rise!!
* After sunrise headed to the Valley of the Wind for our morning hike. We walked in the gorge of Kata Tjuta's boulders.
* The second lookout was worth the walk, great view from it.
* We continued the walk instead of walking back (like most people did/do).
* We caught up with French couple and they 1 yr old son and had a nice walk and chat together.
* Did a second walk inside a gorge. It was nice but getting too hot again, ౩9°C.
* Back in Yulara, went to campground had lunch and showers.
* Took the road towards Alice but stopped 50kms beforehand.

Tuesday, 21 March 2017

Photo a day - 21/03/17

* Alarm early to see the sunrise but woke up before it anyway. Left the hostel at 5.45am.
* Parked close to the path and walked fast to make sure we will still have some space on the viewing plateform (a lot of buses are arriving at the same time).  Managed to get a good sport and took loads of pics, it was really nice!
* Went to do the Base walk (walk all around the base of Uluru: 10kms). We did it anticlockwise. It was nice but quite boring for most parts.
* Then we went to the cultural centre to inform ourself a bit (we already new a lot of things from reading the signs around Uluru). We also saw some aboriginal art, I really like it, it is colourful with dots and small streaks of colours and animals. Can't bring any home though...
* Back at the hostel we cooked lunch: pasta  bolognese with meat and roasted peppers+onions. Made also some hummus.
* Went in the hostel pool for a while (too hot to do anything else) and had showers afterwards.
* Checked into the campground for the night and rushed to see the sunset on Uluru again (Kata Tjuta was too far).
* Had dinner in the campground and then bed.

Monday, 20 March 2017

Photo a day - 20/03/17

* Left before sunrise and saw the sun rising in our rear-view mirror.
* Arrived at King's Canyon and did the rim walk (walk all around the top of the canyon)
* Walk from 8 to 11am and it was already way too hot by 10am... we enjoyed the small break in the Garden of Eden (hidden garden inside the canyon at the back of it).
* Drove to Uluru and reached 6000kms on the odometer on the way.
* Checked in the hostel for a night out of the tent (too hot outside).
* Went to the national park and see Uluru for the first time during sunset: STUNNING!!
* Back at the hostel we got picked up at 8.25pm for the "Field of Lights", an art installation with rainbow coloured lights, beautiful.

* Reached 5000kms at some point in the morning since leaving Perth 13 days ago.
* Back on the road at 2pm. Drove the rest of the day, swapping seat, nearly all the way to King's Canyon. In the middle of the afternoon we made it to the Northern Territory.
* Most of the afternoon it was 38℃
* We saw the sun set just before 8pm while on our last piece of road to the campsite. We pitched the tent with the last ligths and had a quick dinner while attacked by millions of ants.
* Early night because early get up tomorrow to go to King's Canyon.

Saturday, 18 March 2017

Photo a day - 18/03/17

* Alarm at 6.45, still in bed at 7.40am, but got up quickly after that. Tidied up everything and went to the buffet breakfast. Damien ate so much!
* Started our walk "Mount Ohlssen Bagge" at 9.40. Recommended 4h and rated as hard. It was indeed exhausting, so hot and no shade. But the view at the top was well worth it. We did it in 3h30 including resting at the top for 30min.
* Sneaked back in the campground to use the showers. Then we were on our way back to Port Augusta.
* PA: petrol stop + lunch by the beach at 3.30pm.
* 4pm, back on the road towards the "Red Centre" to get to Uluru, hopefully in 2 days.
* On the road, stopped at lookouts. One of them, we got to walk on Lake Hart, which is a salt lake.
* Drove until we reached a campsite on King's Canyon. Got attacked by ants over diner in the dark.

* Lunch in the carpark before heading for Port Augusta.
* in PA we went to a specialised information centre for the "Red Centre", the woman suggested which route to take. Then food shopping in Coles.

* Mounted our tent, got it ready and had diners at the BBQ/kitchen area: meat + roasted peppers and feta. Dessert: rasberries and dark chocolate.
* Showers and bed!

* 10am drove to city centre. Visited Central Market, bought fruits and veg + crêpes for breakfast! Yum!
* Walked to North Terrace where all the nice buildings were (universities, parliament, railway station, museum...). Also went to the Botanic Garden and to the National Wine Centre of Australia.
* Visited the museum then Damien had a taste of 5 different wines of his choosing: Riesling, Chardonnay, Grenache, Shiraz and Sauvignon-blanc. They were all from Australia.
* Walked back through town via the river to the Market for a really late lunch and a treat.
* Left town for the lookout of Mount Lofty around 4.30 but too hazy to get a nice view. Headed to our campsite via the scenic route through Clare (wine area). Traffic made us arrive late but the colours were beautiful.

Wednesday, 15 March 2017

Photo a day - 15/03/17

* Slow start, we left the campground after 10.30am.
* Drove to Adelaide and met our friend Glenda at her place. She is hosting us for the night.
* We both had showers and did 2 loads of laundry. It feels good to be clean and have clean clothes!
* I checked my emails and there is great news in my inbox: my working-holiday visa for Canada has been accepted, it is official we are going to Canada!
* Glenda took us on a car tour of the city, showing us all the good stuff to see tomorrow.
* We picked up her mum and went to the restaurant. Judy is turning 85 tomorrow (we are birthday crashers!) It was a nice evening hanging out with Australians.

Tuesday, 14 March 2017

Photo a day - 14/03/17

* late getting up this morning, the 2h30 time change really threw us off...
* Were on the road at 9.45, I started driving and same drill as yesterday we swapped every 2h or so.
* While driving we had really good long talks about our wedding, our summer in Europe, moving to Canada... It was really productive!
* We crossed: the Nullarbor plain, Nullarbor roadhouse, Yalata roadhouse, Penong village (we stopped for lunch), the quarantine stop (had to bin an apple, half a lime and a few cherry tomatoes...), finally reach Ceduna (1st real town! Topped up fuel), Wirulla roadhouse, Kimba village, Port Augusta (where we got flashed....not used to be in towns again...) and reached a campground near Port Pirie for the night.
* We murdered an unbelievable number of various insects and were unable to keep a clean windshield...despite cleaning it several times at petrol stations....
* We drove 1050 kms today, and both have pending headaches.

Monday, 13 March 2017

Photo a day - 13/03/17

* We drove the longest straight road in Australia 90 miles = 143 kms. Pretty boring!
* We saw too many dead kangaroos by the side and often on the road... some eagles too... So sad... And crows eating their carcasses. Also saw a group of 3 emus hanging out by the side of the road (thinking about crossing but not decided yet!)
* Did some proper camping cooking tonight. Trying to use all our leftover rice before it goes off. We did a fried rice with onion + carrot + peas with spices and we also did a rice galette (rice + spices + beaten eggs).

Sunday, 12 March 2017

Photo a day - 12/03/17

* Janet is at work, Daithi is recovering from yesterday. We had a lazy/easy morning.
* Damien & I took the bus and went to Fremantle aka Freo.
* Went to the market, had lunch there, saw the prison (the outside of it), crossed town, saw the Round House and the artsy beach, crossed back town and headed home.
* Made plans with Janet and Daithi for diner and evening: restaurant + open air cinema.
* Mixed up in the restaurant booking but found a different one and ate good food.
* The open air cinema was pretty cool. It was several short comedies from different countries, some really good ones. We had great spots (comfy beanbags not to far from the screen) and ate cupcakes from Freo's market.

* Joined Daithi (Damien's cousin) for breakfast with his doctor work colleagues after their night shift.
* Met Janet (Daithi's wife) for the 1st time.
* Spent afternoon and evening at the leaving BBQ of one of their friends. Went for our 1st swim in the Indien Ocean and watched the sunset on the beach!
* Home and bed (especially for Daithi that has been awake for more than 24h....).
